Presentations for National Pain Week

22 – 28 July 2024

To mark National Pain Week, Arthritis Pain Support and ME/CFS is presenting a free online talk series by experts, helping you understand chronic pain and how to manage it. The speakers will allow time for questions and answers from participants. Learning more about chronic conditions can help you manage them. All welcome – members and the public.

Understanding Foot Pain – a Step Towards Relief

Tues 23 July  11am – 12pm

Presented by Linda Clee, an experienced physio, who will share her knowledge as well as some practical tips on how to reduce pain in the foot and keep stepping in the direction of relief!

Linda has been a physio for more than 20 years, having a special interest in long term, chronic pain.  A few years ago Linda devised her own foot program which has allowed people to gain relief from chronic foot pain. 

The Management of Joint Pain

Join pain specialist Dr Roopa Gawarikar as she discusses the strategies for managing joint pain.

Dr Gawarikar is a dual qualified Specialist Pain Medicine Physician, Radiation Oncologist and Interventional Pain Specialist at the Canberra Region Neurology and Pain Centre. Her areas of expertise include chronic back and neck pain, neuropathic pain, headaches, pelvic pain and cancer pain. Dr Gawarikar is the Faculty of Pain Medicine ACT representative on NSW Regional Pain Committee and believes in comprehensive multimodal pain management.  

Solving Sciatica

Thurs 25 July  2pm – 3pm

Presented by Sophie Bullock, an accredited exercise physiologist working at Arthritis ACT.

Sciatica is a common chronic pain condition that can lead to debilitating pain, causing problems walking, sitting, sleeping.  Understanding the causes of sciatica and treatments, including exercise, can give you lasting relief from sciatica.

Sophie has a passion for working with people with chronic pain conditions, especially those for whom sport and exercise has not been of high importance in their lives.  Sophie also teaches at the University of Canberra and mentors the next generation of exercise physiologists in their new careers.

Opioids and Chronic Pain

Fri 26 July  11.30am – 12.30pm

Pain and rehabilitation medicine specialist, Dr Geoffrey Speldewinde, will discuss why we’ve largely moved away from the use of opioids in chronic pain management and what the alternatives to managing your chronic pain are.

Dr Speldewinde directs the private multidisciplinary Capital Pain and Rehabilitation Clinic and is on the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Pain Medicine. He has been director of hospital-based rehabilitation medicine services and on the executive of the Australian Pain Society and the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.


Zoom Strength Exercise Classes

Offered multiple times per week by our exercise team, these classes will improve your strength and balance while helping you to connect with others, in an online environment. No equipment or previous exercise experience is required. Bookings are essential to ensure you receive the link to join and can be made by calling our office.

These online exercise classes are free for all financial members of Arthritis, Pain Support and ME/CFS ACT. A tax deductible donation of $50 every 6 months is appreciated to help ensure we can keep these classes running in the long term but, it is not compulsory).

Classes are held:

  • Tuesdays 10am
  • Wednesdays 10am
  • Thursdays 10am

 


GLA:D® Education sessions 1 & 2

GLA:D® (Good Life with Arthritis: Denmark), is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. GLA:D® uses education and exercise to help with daily activities. It is run only by physiotherapists. Click here to find out more about our GLA:D® program

Education Session Times

Education sessions are offered both face-to face and via zoom. Face-to-face sessions are only available at our Bruce office (170 Haydon Drive, Bruce). All sessions run for 1.5 hours. Please contact our office to book your spot and obtain the zoom details.
